Course Overview
The NX CAM Fundamentals Training is designed to quickly bring users up to speed with the core functionalities and workflow of NX CAM. Through hands-on exercises and guided instruction, participants will learn how to set up machining operations, generate tool paths, and post NC codes for 3-axis milling and drilling applications.
Prerequisites
- Foundational NX CAD skills: Familiarity with the NX CAD interface, basic part modelling, and geometry creation.
- Basic understanding of CAM and CNC machining: Familiarity with machining processes, toolpaths, and CNC operations is recommended to follow along with programming workflows.
Who Should Get NX CAM Fundamentals Training?
This course is designed for individuals who are new to NX CAM, but is especially ideal for:
- CNC programmers transitioning to or starting with Siemens NX
- Industry educators and trainers who support manufacturing programs
- Technical students or apprentices in CNC machining or manufacturing technology programs

Course Topics
Take a look at the topics covered day-to-day in our NX CAM Fundamentals Training:
Day 1
Introduction to NX CAM
Objective: Familiarize users with the NX CAM environment and basic CAM workflow.
- Overview of the CAM interface and navigation
- Introduction to the CAM workflow: tool creation, geometry creation, operation creation, toolpath creation, toolpath simulation, stock removal analysis, and postprocessing
- Activity 1: Set up a basic 3-axis operation
Tool Setup & Machine Simulation
Objective: Review morning material, expand on tool management, and introduce machine simulation.
- In-depth work through of NX’s tool management: search for existing tools and holders, create custom tools and holders, and assign tools to proper tool slots
- Activity 2: Create a complete tool setup
- Introduction to the machine simulation environment: load and position the machine, use Machine Code-Based Simulation, view the G-code display, activate collision detection, and enable stock material removal.
- Activity 3: Set up and simulate a complete 3-axis operation with a CNC machine
Day 2
Operation Types & Parameters
Objective: Deepen understanding of operation types and their corresponding dialog settings.
- Overview of operation types and their typical use cases
- Detailed explanation of key dialog sections: Main, Geometry, Tool Axis, Cut Levels, and more
- Clarification of NX CAM terminology compared to shop-floor terms (e.g., engage vs. lead-in, retract vs. lead-out)
- Activity 4: Set up roughing operations
- Activity 5: Set up finishing operations
Feature-Based Machining
Objective: Review the morning material, then explore NX Feature-Based Machining to automate toolpath creation and streamline CNC programming workflows.
- Complete Activity 5
- Introduction to Feature-Based Machining (FBM): identify features, create feature processes, and perform automatic hole drilling/machining
- Activity 6: Utilize FBM for hole drilling
Day 3
Multiple Work Offsets & Setups
Objective: Introduce best practices for managing multiple setups and work offsets in NX CAM.
- Overview of methods for managing multiple work offsets
- Insight into best practices for managing multiple setups
- Activity 7: Add additional work offsets
- Activity 8: Complete additional 3-axis CAM setups of the same part
Summary Project
Objective: Apply all learned skills in a comprehensive project.
- Activity 9: Complete a full 3-axis CAM setup from start to finish, including flipping the part over. This project involves multiple operations, tool changes, and setups. (Non-guided but assisted)
- Share additional insights and tips
